Der Video-Essay Ese Ajeno Sur (2018-2022) reflektiert den Tod von Aktivisten wie Santiago Maldonado, Rafael Nahuel oder Elias Garay, die im Zuge von Landkonflikten in Patagonien ums Leben kamen und fragt, wie sie beim Namen genannt und erinnert werden können. Wie lässt sich der Faustische Größenwahn in eine Kritik übersetzten, die Extraktivismus, Enteignung, sowie die Allianz staatlicher Institutionen mit den Interessen der Latifundistas und internationaler Konzerne wie der Firma Benetton in den Blick nimmt?
Und was hat das alles mit uns zu tun?
The video work Ese Ajeno Sur (2018-2022) is a reflection on the deaths of activists like Santiago Maldonado, Rafael Nahuel, or Elias Garay, who died in the course of land conflicts in Patagonia. How they can be named and remembered? How can this Faustian megalomania be translated into a form of critique that targets extractivism, dispossession, and the alliance of state institutions with the interests of latifundistas and international corporations like Benetton?
And what does all this have to do with us?

Wie ist Goethes Faust in seiner finalen Inkarnation als Landentwickler heute zu verstehen?Mit Blick auf den fortwährenden Ökozid und die Todesopfer der neo-extraktivistischen Landnahme fragen wir uns: Wie kann sein Erfolg, sein brennender Ehrgeiz, seine Blindheit und schließlich sein Tod neu interpretiert werden?
Indem wir Faust querlesen mit der fortwährenden gewaltsamen Repression indigener Kämpfe um Landrechte in Patagonien, richten wir unseren Blick auf die fernen und doch so nahen Geografien des Faustischen Naturverhältnisses und auf die, die sich dagegen zu wehr setzten – in der Gegenwart und durch die Geschichte.

How could Goethe’s hero Faust, in his final incarnation as land-developer, be understood today? how can his success, his burning ambition, his blindness and subsequent death be re-interpreted in the light of the on-going ecocide and the death toll of the neo-extractivist frontier ?
In cross-referencing Faust with the on-going violent repression of indigenous land claims in Patagonia, we look to the far-away and yet so near geographies of this faustian relation to nature, and plea for those who resist, and who have resisted through history.

Indem wir Passagen aus Goethes Faust 2 mit der anhaltenden gewaltsamen Unterdrückung indigener Landansprüche in Patagonien querlesen, schauen wir auf die weit entfernten und doch so nahen Geografien des faustischen Naturverhältnisses und auf gegenwärtige wie historische Figuren des Widerstands.
Die Lectureperformance basiert auf Zitaten von Goethe und Marshal Berman, kritischen Texten zum kolonialen Erbe Argentiniens und auf Presseberichten über die jüngsten Ermordungen von Aktivisten im Zusammenhang mit anhaltenden Landkonflikten. Wir fragen, wie Faust in seiner letzten Inkarnation als Projektemacher, Ingenieur und Entwickler heute mit Blick auf den fortschreitenden Ökozid und die Todesopfer der extraktivistischen und neokolonialen Landnahme gelesen und neu interpretiert werden kann.
In cross-referencing Goethe’s Faust 2 with the on-going violent repression of indigenous land claims in Patagonia, we looked to the far-away and yet so near geographies of the Faustian relation to nature, rethinking figures of resistance in the present and through history.
In this lecture performance we cited literature from Goethe to Marshal Berman, critical writing on Argentinian colonial heritage, and press coverage of recent murders of activists in the context of on-going land-disputes. We asked how Faust, in his final incarnation as land-developer, can be understood and re-interpreted today, in the light of the on-going ecocide and the death toll of the extractivist and neo-colonial frontier.
